I was very hopeful when I began reading this book. But unfortunately, as I continued, it began dragging, and dragging, and then it dragged so much that I literally had to skip pages to get through it just to find out how everything and everyone ends up. Way too much unnecessary dialogue and description made me completely lose interest. I must admit though her writing is BEAUTIFUL. Also, the topic she chose to tackle - our fast-warming world, and the ripple effects it's having on every thing and everyone is extremely topical and important and I'm glad she did that. I loved the core idea of the story - masses of monarchs in a home away from home, all thanks to the changing climate among other things. Eco-fiction definitely, with a very promising story idea and beautifully constructed sentences. But the excessive jargon, dialogue and description made it an exceedingly slow read and a very dull overall storyline, with hardly any character growth. If you want to learn heaps about ecology, butterflies, climate change and other aspects of the natural world, it's a great read. If you're looking for a strong plot, with a solid story line and three-dimensional characters that change as the story progresses (Dellarobia is the only character who visibly grew), then you might want to give this book a skip.
